Dr Peter Sumich

laser eye surgeons SydneyDr Peter Sumich Dr Peter Sumich is a Cataract and Refractive Surgeon from Parramatta, Sydney. He has a special interest in refractive cataract surgery and LASIK Laser Eye Surgery for vision correction. He has performed over 7000 cataract and refractive surgery procedures and has over 20 years of surgical experience.

Dr Sumich is the President of the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists (2017- ) and the Past Chairman of the Independent Ophthalmologists Association (2008-2011). He is a member of The Australian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons where he was appointed as a member of their "Council of 100" which comprises 100 international thought leaders who advise on future direction and strategy.

Dr Sumich graduated with Honours from NSW University in 1990. He did his Residency at Royal North Shore Hospital and then trained there as an Emergency Medicine Specialist being awarded the Medal in the Primary Sciences Exam. He transferred to eye surgery in 1997 and later graduated from Sydney Eye Hospital in 2001. He was honoured to be appointed as the Professorial Senior Registrar in his final year at Sydney Eye Hospital and worked with the Sydney University Department of Ophthalmology which deals with complex eye disease.

After gaining Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists he was awarded the Sir Norman Rose travelling scholarship in 2001 and furthered his surgical experience by living in England where he underwent a Corneal and Cataract Surgery Fellowship at Bristol Eye Hospital. In recognition of his high level of training, the Royal British College of Ophthalmology granted him registration as a specialist eye surgeon in Britain.

Dr Sumich has held public hospital postings as an Associate Eye Surgeon at Sydney Eye Hospital and was previously a Consultant Eye Surgeon at Westmead Hospital where he trained Registrars in cataract surgery. He has been a Clinical Lecturer with the Sydney University Department of Ophthalmology at the Save Sight Institute.

Dr Sumich has published many scientific papers and was a Cataract Section Editor for the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology ('Australian Journal of Ophthalmology') for several years. He has worked on the Blue Mountains Eye Study and in the UK was involved in research on a new drug therapy for Corneal Transplant rejection which involved collaboration with Sydney, Bristol and Nottingham University.

Dr Sumich regularly presents lectures and seminars at medical conferences around Australia and overseas. Dr Sumich continues to update his knowledge and skills and is committed to providing his patients with the very best eye care available.



Dr Ridia Lim

She graduated from the University of NSW in 1992 and completed ophthalmology training in Sydney Eye Hospital to attain the fellowship to the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) in 2001. Dr Lim furthered her training as a Cataract Surgery Specialist at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2001. In 2002 and 2003, Dr Lim completed glaucoma fellowship training in Oxford Eye Hospital, Oxford, United Kingdom.
Dr Lim has worked on major research studies, including the Blue Mountains Eye Study, from which she gained a Masters degree in Public Health from Sydney University in 1998, completing a treatise on risk factors for cataract. She has participated in international multicentre glaucoma research studies and herself, designed glaucoma studies, some published in peer-reviewed journals and some currently in progress.
Dr Lim has published journal articles, has presented internationally and is the published author of several book chapters in glaucoma and glaucoma surgery, in international collaborations. She has acted as a reviewer for both journal and book chapters in the subspecialty of glaucoma.
Dr Lim holds a public hospital appointment at Prince of Wales Hospital; clinical teaching, surgical teaching, mentoring ophthalmology registrars and lecturing optometry students are a part of this role. She is a past Assistant Director of Training for Sydney Eye Hospital Training Programme, elected by the NSW Qualification and Education Committee. She is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Glaucoma Club and the South East Asian Glaucoma Interest Group.
Dr Lim was born in Busan, South Korea, immigrating to Australia in 1976. She speaks conversational Korean. She is married to Dr Sean Griffin, a talented gastroenterologist and they have a lovely daughter, Erin.



Dr George Thomson

Laser cataract surgery ParramattaGeorge Thomson is a Sydney University medical graduate. He completed a year’s residency at Wollongong hospital and the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He then taught anatomy at Adelaide University whilst preparing for his ophthalmology entrance exams.
He commenced his Ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital where he was a registrar and then became the Clinical Superintendant. He continued his training as the research fellow of Professor Richard Troutman (a pioneer of corneal and refractive surgery) in New York. During this time he worked with Dr Charles Kellman who was then developing phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
Since returning to Australia he has been in private practice in Parramatta and Westmead. His principal interest is in cataract surgery, corneal surgery and LASIK eye surgery.
Dr Thomson has been an assistant editor of the Australian Journal of Ophthalmology, Chairman of the Cataract and Day Surgery Committee of the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmology, a board member of the Australian Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia and a consultant to the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
Dr Thomson has presented many papers at meetings both in Australia and overseas. He has coordinated workshops to teach intraocular lens implantation, extra capsular cataract extraction, phacoemulsification techniques and refractive techniques. He has participated in the trials of several intraocular lenses and several ophthalmic drugs.
Dr Thomson is currently a member of the Royal Australasian College of Ophthalmology, a foundation member of the Australian Cataract and Refractive Society, a foundation member of the ASIO Pacific Cataract and Refractive Society and has been a member of the American Cataract and Refractive Society since 1979. He has recently been invited to join the International Intraocular Implant Club.



Michelle De Guia (Practice Manager/Senior Orthoptist)

Laser cataract surgery SydneyMichelle De Guia is our Practice Manager and is also a senior Orthoptist. She has a degree in Science and majored in Orthoptics at Sydney University, graduating in 1999. She worked for seven years in multidisciplinary practices that specialized in cataract, refractive, glaucoma, retinal and oculoplastic surgery before joining Hunter Street Eye Specialists in 2007.

Michelle is responsible for managing the team and is also involved in the assessment of patients prior to seeing our specialists. She is enjoys being involved in the counseling and assessment of patients who are undergoing Laser refractive and cataract surgery. More so her main goal is to have a happy satisfied team of both Doctors and Staff to help deliver the best patient care. She believes in giving each patient the "Hunter Street TLC" and her aim is providing patient satisfaction.



Gabriella Kiraly (Senior Orthoptist)

Gabriella also finds time to manage her own internet-based recruiting agency for allied health care personnel. “Eyedeal Careers” has been operating successfully for over 4 years now.




Jayda Temizyuz (Senior Orthoptist)

Laser cataract surgery Sydney Jayda graduated from Sydney University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Health Science and a Masters in Clinical Vision Sciences and has been a part of our team since 2015. Prior to this she has worked at a multidisciplinary clinic and has experience in the areas of glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts and refractive surgery.

Here at Hunter Street Eye Specialists, Jayda is involved in assessing and counselling patients and coordinate's surgery lists for our specialists. She specialises in cataract and refractive assessments to determine patient suitability for laser vision correction and has a particular interest in the area of clinical trials.



Cindy Li (Senior Orthoptist)

Laser cataract surgery Sydney Cindy Graduated in 2011 from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Medical Science and Master of Orthoptics, Cindy's recent studies make her an excellent source of current information for both her colleagues and patients. Cindy is involved in assessing and counselling patients before they see our specialists. She uses modern technology to provide optimal outcomes for cataract and refractive patients.

With a lifetime interest in eye health, Cindy is able to help our patients get the care, information and help they deserve. Joining the team at Hunter Street Eye Specialists has strengthened Cindy's passion for eye health as well as providing her with support in her development as a professional in the industry.



Pavni (Senior Orthoptist)

Laser cataract surgery Sydney Pavni joined the Hunter Street Eye Specialists family in 2018 bringing with her a wealth of clinical experience. Graduating in 2009 with a Degree in Orthoptics Pavni is responsible for clinical pre-assessments and tests. She provides excellent clinical patient care with empathy.





Carolina Russo (Orthoptic Assistant)

Laser cataract surgery Sydney Carolina has been working as an Orthoptic Assistant for the last year. Carolina has been Internally Credited and has also had practical training within the clinic. Although she is the most recent addition to our Orthoptic team, Carolina has been a part of the Hunter Street Eye Specialist team since 2015 as our front face receptionist.

Carolina is responsible for assessment of all patients prior to seeing the eye specialist. She maintains professional knowledge, up to date practicing skills and provides the highest quality care for patients. She manages all the processes associated with patient care and helps administer Intravitreal injections for patients with age related macular degeneration.

Dr Gianpiero Traini MBBS (Syd); FANZCA (Specialist Anaesthetist)

Specialist Anaesthetist Dr Traini is an experienced specialist anaesthetist who has been in practice for the last 10 years. He aims to provide all his patients with a high level of expert anaesthetic care, regardless of how complicated their surgery may be.

Dr Traini completed his medical training at The University of Sydney, graduating in 1994. His subsequent specialist anaesthetic training took place at Westmead Hospital, Nepean Hospital and Westmead Children's hospital. He was admitted to the Fellowship of the Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2004. He is a member of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists, the Australian Medical Association and Anaesthesia Associates.

Dr Traini works predominantly in private practice in Sydney. He has clinical privileges in anaesthesia at Norwest Private Hospital, City West Specialist Day Hospital, Nepean Private Hospital, Pennant Hills Day Surgery, Epping Surgery Centre, the Sydney Adventist Hospital and Westmead Private Hospital.

Dr Traini has a diverse practice, with special interests in anaesthesia for ophthalmic surgery, obstetric and gynaecological surgery, general and laparoscopic surgery, maxillofacial and dental surgery, endoscopic surgery, day surgery and acute pain management including epidural pain relief.

Time outside of work is usually taken up with family activities and fishing.



Dr Deidre Sun MBBS(Hons) Sydney 1990, Dip. Child Health, RCP(UK)1993, Dip. Obstetrics and Gynaecology, RCOG(UK) 1994, FANZCA 2002. (Specialist Anaesthetist)

Specialist Anaesthetist Dr Deidre Sun graduated in medicine from University of Sydney in 1990 and began her anaesthesia experience in the UK in 1995 . She obtained her Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2002. She completed her paediatric anaesthesia fellowship at the Westmead Children's Hospital, as well as 2 years doing a neuroanaesthesia fellowship and general clinical research fellowship in Vancouver, Canada in 2003-2004.

She currently works at Nepean Public Hospitals, Macquarie University Hospital , Norwest Private Hospital and City West Specialist Day Hospital. Her areas of special interests are paediatric anaesthesia, anaesthesia for breast, colorectal, eye, orthopaedic and urology surgery, and airway management. Dr Sun also has interests in rock climbing, telemark skiing and surfing, which she actively pursues in her spare time.

Dr Sun is a member of the Australian Association of Anaesthetists and the Australian Medical Association.
