Vision Correction: Know Your Options

Having clear functional vision without the need for visual hardware is possible.

Marketing terminologies can be confusing and more so which to choose can quickly becomes a minefield of confusion.

To simplify, the choice falls under two main umbrellas – Corneal Treatments and Lens Procedures

Though there are different types of Corneal based laser vision correction procedures, the premise is the same – to improve vision by reshaping the cornea through the use of laser in order to reduce dependency or in some cases altogether remove the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Changing the shape of the cornea via laser changes its ability to “focus” images on to the retina hence changing the clarity of your vision without visual hardware.

Vision can also be corrected by insertion of a man-made Lens using Intra Ocular Lenses (IOL) or (ICL) Implantable Collimer/Contact Lenses. Replacing the lens inside the eye via Refractive Lensectomy or Clear Lens Exchange can reduce dependency on visual hardware, as does inserting a Phakic IOL or ICL.

At Hunter Street Eye Specialists, we understand that it’s not a one size fits all solution and hence customise each treatment to individual needs. The decision as to which procedure is the best suited to you requires a full eye health review and thorough discussion with the eye specialist regarding the pros and cons of each procedure.

Treating Cataracts: The Latest Technology

Current treatment for Cataract is removal via surgical means.

The procedure and surgical techniques have improved markedly over the years, increasing accuracy of results and better surgical outcomes. Technology has enabled surgeons to refine surgical techniques during the procedure through the improvements in Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) design and better delivery mechanisms for insertion of IOL.

Pre-Surgery measurements have increased the accuracy of visual outcomes through advancements in instrumentation. At Hunter Street Eye Specialists Dr Lim and Dr Sumich use swept source optical coherence (OCT) biometry, that has proven track record for repeatability & reproducibility – quickly becoming the industry gold standard for ocular biometry. Measuring the length and curvature of the eye accurately, assists clinicians and surgeons with IOL power calculations to achieve desired visual outcomes. Swept source biometry has been demonstrated to be more effective in measuring eyes with dense cataracts, providing surgeons accuracy in lens power calculations and hence increasing likelihood of more accurate targeted visual outcomes.

Cataract Surgery for Clearer Vision

A Cataract is a clouding over of the crystalline lens that can cause blurry vision and glare sensitivity from lights particularly at night. If a cataract is affecting you performing normal activities, then you may need to consider having Cataract Surgery.

Cataract surgery involves removal of the crystalline lens and replacing it with a silicone/acrylic intraocular lens (IOL). These IOL’s serve not only to provide clearer vision but can also provide a reduction in spectacle dependence.

Unsuitable for Laser Vision Correction? It’s Not the End of the Road

Though most people are suitable for laser vision correction whether it be LASIK, PRK or SMILE, there are going to be those who are not, but doesn’t have to be the end of the road!

One alternative option is Refractive Lens Exchange or Clear Lensectomy, where the lens behind the coloured part of the eye is replaced with an intraocular lens.

Intraocular Lenses can correct short sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hypermetropia) and also astigmatism, in fact it can correct much higher ranges for all types of correction than any type of laser vision correction. As with any type of procedure a full eye health assessment is necessary to ascertain suitability

Dr. Peter Sumich offers his perspective on shortcomings of current clinical measurement of vision with a Snellen Chart.

Monovision: A Reliable Paradigm for Presbyopes

Blended Vision or Monovision has been utilised for many years as a reliable strategy to achieve the ability to perform near and distance tasks without the aid of glasses or contact lenses. It is a term coined for those whose non-dominant eye is intentionally focused for near to reduce or sometimes remove the need for visual hardware for close range tasks such as using a mobile phone, reading, sewing and computer work, while concurrently leaving the dominant eye focused for distance tasks such as driving and watching cinema or the T.V.

Blended vision can be achieved with Laser Vision Correction or via Lens Exchange and offers a more permanent solution for those who want to be able to perform both distance and near tasks free from visual hardware.
